Lovely 101-acre Raccoon Creek Lake is the centerpiece of Raccoon Creek State Park, one of the most beautiful in the Pennsylvania state park system.
The park has a swimming beach and a boat launch area. Anglers fish for bluegill, catfish, sunfish, bullheads, yellow perch, walleye, muskellunge, crappie, largemouth and smallmouth bass. Brown trout and rainbow trout are found in the lake and streams.
Five miles of pathways offer close-up views of the wildflowers in the Wildflower Reserve and Visitor Center. Foot paths total 44 miles in all, and there are 16 miles of bridle trails.
Environmental education and interpretative activities include guided walks, historical tours and children's programs.
Hunting is permitted in season on more than 6,000 of the park's 7,323 acres. The park is home to many game species, and white-tailed deer are frequently seen.
History buffs will want to follow the trail to the Frankfort Mineral Springs; the waters were once believed to have healing powers. Interpretive programs tell the story of the springs and the famous spa that was located here in the 1800s. In winter, the spring's fantastic ice formations draw visitors.
Also of historic interest is King's Creek Cemetery, where many of the region's first settlers are buried.
Winter activities include ice fishing and ice-skating, sledding, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing.
Facilities include 10 modern cabins, a three-bedroom cottage, 172 tent and trailer campsites and a recreation hall.
