Laurel Hill State Park sits in the mountainous country of southwestern Pennsylvania where laurel and rhododendron bloom each spring.
Twelve miles of hiking trails weave through the park and hills, which are forested with sugar maples, oak, cherry, poplar and birch trees. The Hemlock Hiking Trail winds through a lovely stand of old-growth hemlocks and leads to a self-guided nature trail.
The forest supports abundant wildlife, including white-tailed deer, ruffed grouse, mink and smaller mammals. Wildlife watchers are most likely to see smaller mammals, but an occasional bear has been reported.
Anglers catch bass, trout, catfish, perch and crappie. Boating is restricted to non-motorized or electric-powered craft.
Winter sports include ice-fishing on the lake, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The park's 12-mile snowmobile trail connects with a 60-mile trail network in the Forbes State Forest.
Laurel Hill has 264 seasonal campsites, eight camping cottages that sleep five people, and the Laurel Hill Lodge, which sleeps 14 guests.
